Subaru Impreza WRC flying through a forest stage

Subaru's motorsport story is dominated by the World Rally Championship (WRC). In the 1990s, the iconic blue-and-yellow Subaru Impreza 555 – sponsored by State Express 555 – became a legend. Drivers like Colin McRae, Richard Burns, and Petter Solberg piloted these turbocharged, all‑wheel‑drive beasts to victory on gravel, snow, and tarmac.

WRC Achievements

  • Manufacturers' Championships: 1995, 1996, 1997
  • Drivers' Championships: Colin McRae (1995), Richard Burns (2001), Petter Solberg (2003)
  • Total WRC wins: 47
  • Most famous car: Impreza WRC 97 (first to use active differential)
“If in doubt, flat out.” – Colin McRae

Beyond WRC, Subaru has also dominated the Nürburgring 24 Hours (winning its class multiple times with the WRX STI), Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and grassroots rallycross. The brand's motorsport DNA lives on in every WRX sold today, with a massive aftermarket and a thriving club racing community.

Even after Subaru left the WRC factory program in 2008, privateers continue to race Imprezas worldwide. The legacy of the blue-and-yellow rally cars remains one of the most beloved in automotive history.
